Boston Butt

Boston Butt †

is the portion of the hog containing the arm bone, shank bone, and a portion of the blade bone. Picnic shoulders and Pork Hams (that contain the leg bone) are not considered valid entries.

Boston Butt

Pork Shoulder ‡

is the portion of the hog containing the arm bone, shank bone, and a portion of the blade bone. This is the piece most people are familiar with as "pulled pork. " This large piece of meat has to be properly cooked and seasoned so that it is consistent throughout. Mere Boston butts and picnic shoulders are not considered valid entries for MBN Teams.

Pork Ribs

Pork Ribs †‡

is the portion of the hog containing the ribs, and is further classified as a spare rib, loin rib, or babyback rib. Country style ribs are not a valid entry. Ribs are the most vulnerable to changes in weather, time, and temperature and have the smallest margin for error.

Whole Hog

Whole Hog ‡

is an entire hog, whose dressed weight is 85 pounds or more prior to the optional removal of the head, feet, and skin. It must be cooked, sometimes for as long as 24 hours, as one complete unit on one grill surface. The trick to a good whole hog is ensuring that all the various cuts of meat found in a whole hog reach perfection at the same time. As a result, judges are required to sample portions of the ham, shoulder, and loin in making their decision.

The theme for our booth competition this year is, “I’m Hot for Blaze!” in recognition of our new mascot, Blaze. Click here to download an image. In order to be considered in the booth competition, your booth must include the following:

  • At least one recognizable use of Blaze’s image – bonus points for creativity! (Blaze masks, temporary tattoos, and stickers will be provided upon check-in… think outside the box!)
  • Decorations that illustrate Blaze’s attitude – a little bit rock ‘n roll, with some street cred, a leather jacket and a fiery outlook on life. He is the angry step-brother of Hamilton
  • Your team name and logo

Bonus points for those who try and emulate Blaze’s hairstyle.

NO REAL ANIMAL DISPLAYS and nothing that would be considered vulgar (nudity, profane language, or sexual situations). The rest is up to you, good luck!!
